Refining and Recommitting Our Practice with Core Proposition 4:
Teachers Think Systematically About Their Practice and Learn from Experience
The summer of 2023 brought a significant amount of change to Southern High School. Our principal was promoted to the district's central office, which led to new leadership. Changing district student assignment plans meant a dramatic increase in our enrollment, including high numbers of multi-lingual learners. We realized that with the added teaching staff, only 1/3 of our faculty had been at Southern pre-pandemic. We decided to spend 2023-2024 reflecting on what we have learned in five years of being an NB Professional Learning School, refining our practice, and recommitting our entire faculty to Core Propositions 1, 2, and 3.
To give teachers a chance to better learn from each other, we implemented a system of peer observations. Each teacher will visit four other teachers over the course of the year. The visiting teacher will reflect on what they have seen and learned and share this with their evaluating administrator, while providing the host teacher with positive feedback.
